What is a Healthcare Power of Attorney? (and why everyone should have one)

A Healthcare Power of Attorney is a legal document drafted that authorizes someone you trust, typically a close friend or a family member, to make medical decisions on your behalf should you be unable to make decisions for yourself. Situations where this may arise could be car accidents or severe illnesses.

These unfortunate situations could arise extremely quickly without any time for you to sign such a document to give medical decision making power to someone you know and trust. If you don’t have a healthcare POA in place, the court will appoint someone to make the decisions on your behalf.

My experience has been that most people would much prefer a close family member or a friend to make these personal decisions, rather than someone appointed by the court to choose what kind of healthcare you are going to receive.
